There has been a lot of emphasis over recent years on “inclusion”. The idea is that integrating children into mainstream schools rather than placing them in special schools is a “Good Thing”. But is it?
Children with Aspergers syndrome see the world in a different way. With their fixed ideas and concrete thinking they can often come across as very pedantic.
They may also be obsessed with some micro-topic and have little interest in general academic topics that they may regard as irrelevant. With their social skill problems they over act inappropriately in social interactions.
The result of this is that many people, especially their peers, will regard them as “odd” or “weird”. And this, in turn, often leads to them being picked on and bullied. Then, with their poor social skills, this can then lead to arguments or even physical fights.
At the same time they have great difficulties with their teachers who are just trying to teach a subject. With their pedantic interest in micro-topics they can be very tiresome to teach. Not only that, but if the teacher seems to handle situations in any way unfairly, this too will be challenged by the Asperger child.
So, the peers see them as weird and pick on them, and the teachers don’t understand them. So how do these children fare in a normal mainstream school?
The answer, all too often, is very poorly. They often lash out at the bullies, and then argue with the teachers who, they feel, quite unreasonably come down on them instead of the bullies.
Over time these problems compound into more and more complications until the child is either failing dismally, or being kicked out for “bad behavior”.
A very different scenario could occur in a special school. Staffed with teachers and carers with both the traning and the time to take a special interest in these children, the kids often get much more support and help with their social skills. Their self esteem improves, and so does their behavior.
Surprisingly, the other children in these schools can also be much more tolerant, resulting in less teasing and bullying.
Every child is difficult. Surely it is logical that we cannot just apply a blanket ideology to all children as though they were merely sausage meat going through a sausage factory?
Unique children require unique solutions in order to succeed, and if that means a special school, well, then so be it!
Characteristics of Gifted Children
Being the parent of and raising a gifted child can be very exciting and rewarding yet just as daunting as well.
But first, how do you as a parent recognize the characteristics of a gifted child? Definitions and perceptions of what exactly constitutes a gifted child vary among those experts in this field of child development and education.
Gifted children will generally not only require some modifications to the teaching they receive, but will also require parenting modification as well in order to develop optimally.

Some early signs of giftedness may include:
- Has an advanced specific talent with numbers and math or perhaps can draw exceptionally realistic pictures.

- An advanced or intense sense of curiosity.
- A long attention span.
- High level of activity (although hyperactive children display high levels of activity, theirs is usually one combined with a short attention span).
- Reaches child development skills well ahead of their peers.
- Functions at a high level not needing as much sleep (infancy).
- At an early age easily reacts to (recognize) their caregiver.
- At some point the child may begin to sense they are different and display signs of withdrawal.
- The child could possibly show signs of frustrations as their ability to express themselves (emotional development) isn’t on par with their mental capabilities.
- Frequent anger and frustration is a watch point, and could warrant seeking professional advice.
If your child consistently exhibits several of these characteristics of gifted children (if your child is gifted, many of these characteristics go hand in hand) you may want to have your child assessed by a child development professional.
Parenting Gifted Children
Since gifted children develop a much faster rate than what is considered normal, parenting gifted children will require adjustments in parenting as well as teaching in order to continue their development at an optimal rate.
A gifted child’s development can pose some interesting problems for the parent because although the child is cognitively advanced they are probably developing at a much more normal rate physically and emotionally.
As a parent of a gifted child, stay involved and engaged in their developmental program. Continue to do the usual activities with your child. Short, vague, and non detailed answers will often time only lead to more questions and frustration on the part of the child. As a parent of a gifted child, consider seeking out other parents in this unique situation and share ideas and experiences among one another. It takes persistence on your part to stay engaged and involved in the upbringing and development of your child.
Always respect the uniqueness of the child and their opinions, ideas, and thought processes. Because of the uniqueness of the child, they may find it difficult for themselves to fit in with other children and feel out of sync. This unfortunately can be the reality of the outside world, so while at home make sure your child knows that they are loved and appreciated for who they are.
Teaching Children vs Child Learning
One of the great benefits to teaching children at home is the flexibility that you have as a parent.

Probably one of the most interesting dynamics that we discovered when we first began teaching our children at home was the difference between teaching and learning and how children learn best.
The word teaching conjures up and image of someone imparting knowledge to someone else who is then readily absorbing such nuggets of wisdom and take on the world. At first, in all honesty this probably best described our approach.
So much to do with so little time. I’ll teach you absorb. Not to diminish the vast reservoir of knowledge that we as parents can readily impart to our kids, but do they learn? We discovered that many were the times that said knowledge was not necessarily readily received by our kids.
Genuine learning takes place in children when it is done through discovery. When a child goes through the process of discovery the learning experience immediately becomes part of the world around them and this also makes for much better retention.
This is not to say that you would just turn you child lose and say “ok… go learn something.” Rather what you want to take a look at is perhaps seeing yourself less as a ‘teacher’ and more as a …. Well… learning coach or learning agent.
Teach your child from a perspective that you are there to get your child excited about learning and learning how to learn. Not just merely imparting to your child one nugget of wisdom after another.
Encourage you child to discover. And set up environments where discoveries are possible. Explore with your child as the child learns new thing and explores new avenues to learning. Genuine learning breeds motivation and motivation leads to learning.
Think of yourself as your child’s learning and discovery coach, and teaching your child will become much more fruitful.
Reading Skills Teaching
Reading skill teaching to your child is one of the first basic tasks that a homeschooling parent undertakes. After all, if we don’t get that part accomplished, just about any other subject becomes a moot point.
But as you research, ponder, and ultimately decide upon a reading program either packaged, self developed or a little of both, I would also like you to make room in your teaching reading plan for developing good reading habits.
It’s not enough to toil away and feel successful once your child begins to gather reading skills momentum, you must also develop good reading habits in your child as well.
Good reading skills are that important are worth the time not only to develop them in your child, but to insure that they continue to grow. Once your child begins reading more and more on their own, don’t make the assumption that their reading skills will continue to rise. Without developing good reading habits, and making sure your child is in the habit of reading the skills will diminish.
Don’t underestimate the importance of developing good reading skills in your child. After all, you’re reading this aren’t you?
As an adult I am quite sure you take in loads of information each and everyday. Much of it, I am sure comes from reading. As you grew older and your reading skills developed, reading wasn’t a skill for that required a lot of conscious thought.

Make sure that you incorporate into your lesson plan plenty of fun reading activities, and worksheets. At this age, it is critical that your child get off on the right foot by enjoying the art of reading and not only develop good reading skills, but other language and English language skills as well.
Reading, writing, and vocabulary tie together quite nicely as your young reader begins to get started. Keeping them related to one another is a great way to round out your child’s reading and comprehension development.
Reading Activity for Kindergarten

As a homeschooler one of the most important tasks for you to accomplish in your child at an early age is getting them interested in and developing good reading habits.
At an early age learning to recognize letters, the sounds they make and words they eventually form should be an activity and not a structured assignment. A great reading activity for kindergarten aged children, for example is to read to them.
A natural progression in your reading activities with your children is that after you read them to a passage from the story; have them paraphrase the story back to you. This will help you to understand what level of listening ability and understanding they are at, as well has help them to begin building their vocabulary as they work to find new words they can use with their description of the story they are giving back to you.
Good reading activities don’t always have to occur at the house, or just before bedtime. While you’re running errands around town or on vacation, perhaps have the kids begin to collect words from signs, or spell objects they see.
Encourage them to learn different ways to describe objects see. Instead something big, it may by huge, or enormous… or even of gargantuan proportion! Have you child arrange the words they have collected into silly sentences or phrases. Even something as simple as collecting letters from signs, license plates, and such to work their way through the alphabet is a good kindergarten age reading activity.
Not in the car, or travel around much? Use every day items around the house to do the same thing. Labels, there are plenty of labels around the house. Actually put labels on everyday items around the house so your child can associate the spelling, and reading with a tangible item. Then, after a while, take the labels off the items and help your child read and re-label the house.
Once you get your creative juices flowing, you’ll come up with many more reading activities. The key is to make reading activities an every day part of their life. Make an effort to spend an hour a day reading more with an hour less of television. T.V. is an extremely passive thought processing activity. While reading and using one’s imagination is a source of growth and a great foundation from which to build.
