Homeschool
Schedules & What Works For You
A lot of
inquiries and questions come in revolving around what type
of home school schedule works best. Quite
frankly, the answer is in the title of this article. It
really is what works best for you. For those just starting
out, this may also be the most difficult to determine.
Finding out what type of home school schedule that works
best for you will be an adventure in study, experimentation,
and fun.
Because
there are so many different approaches to home education
there are just as many schedules. Unless you have decided to
unschool, you will probably be looking at a more structured
approach and this is where the question of scheduling
inevitably arise. Your home school schedule may require some
documentation based upon the mandates of your individual
state and what actually constitutes a school day and
attendance thereof.

Some homeschoolers' schedules
will mirror the traditional public school schedule. Some may
school in the mornings, some in the evening time. There are
those who home school varying days of the week. Take the
summer off? Sure. Home school through the summer?
Absolutely, if that's what works for you. The point is that
there are so many viable options that you really will need
some time to determine what schedule works for you and your
family. No matter what you decide, you should plan on some
experimentation, sanding, buffing and polishing, before you
arrive at what works for you. The key is being relaxed and
have fun with the journey.
Are
the choices really that wide open? Yes, they are. Keeping in
mind whatever your state requires for homeschooling; they
really are.
The
precautionary note is this; no matter what type of home
school schedule you embark on, be mindful that family
members and friends may not realize how involved and serious
your home school day actually is. Make sure that they
understand that your homeschool time is off limits to visits
and interruptions. If you find yourself keeping a varying
schedule, perhaps give family members and friends a copy of
your schedule or lesson calendar. Many times home school
parents are viewed as having plenty of free time. I can
assure you, quite the opposite is true. So, these
interruptions and encroachments of you and your child's
educational time should be resisted.
In summary,
only you will eventually know your schedule. Don't worry if
your home school schedule doesn't just come
to you right away. Chances are it won't. Think outside your
traditional box, experiment, refine, be patient with your
schedule, and all will work just fine.
