Some Summer Activities For Kids & Families
If school is out for the summer for you... or if perhaps your
homeschooling schedule is a bit less active, the summer is no
time to slow down and slack off!
Let's keep those kids busy!
Let's use the summer to branch out into areas that we might not
otherwise cover with our kids.
No matter what
your schedule or style of homeschooling summer is still a good
time to keep you kids active and mentally sharp.
Here a couple
of ideas to stimulate your mind!
For those who subscribe to
my newsletter or have read some of the many articles on this site, you know
the importance I put on reading.
Summertime is the perfect
time to get those little (and big) readers going. Get up to your local
library and get into a summer reading program.
Nothing works better at
keeping a young mind active during the summer than reading.
Many libraries offer
prizes, and get together types of activities centered on their summer book
clubs.
Get out to the parks and
trails. Take some mini hikes and nature walks. This is great time to add a
little biology and ecology lesson. Or, even an art or photography class for
that matter, so take along your
sketch or activity pad and/or your camera.
If you can, one thing we
always made a point to do with the kids a few times each summer was to camp
out in our very own back yard. If don't have one, get yourself an easy to put up Dome Tent
and head out to the 'great backyard'! What a great time to take a look at
the constellations and the heavens above. And of course cuddle up and read
your favorite night time stories.
Another good idea to
supplement your activities is have your kids keep a summer journal. This is
great way to enhance their writing skills and their vocabulary. And by the
way... it's also great documentation that your kids are staying busy! You (and
they) can see if their journal entries are getting a little light.
For that matter you can
even combine your hikes, nature walks, and camping by keeping a nature
journal. There a couple of really good books on this. One is
Keeping a Nature Journal
by Clare Walker Leslie
and another is
My Nature Journal
by Adrienne Olmstead.
No matter what your
interest, or your homeschool schedule, use whatever time allows this summer
to spend time with your kids.
Have a great - - productive
- - summer!
