The
reasons that parents have made or are making the decision to
homeschool their children are as diverse as the
personalities and values of each individual family.
However
one decision point is climbing the charts at a very rapid
pace, and this reason for homeschooling is child safety. In
fact, in many surveys, child safety and like concerns tops
the list for the reasons for homeschooling their children.
Times
have certainly changed for parents and children today and
not for the better. Almost everyday parents are hit with
stories of violence, abduction, or other senseless crimes
against children. And these troubling statistics continue to
rise. It's no wonder that an increasing number of parents
are becoming more and more concerned about simply sending
their child off to school. Homeschooling one's children
certainly becomes a viable way to assuage a parents concern
for their child's safety for this part of their day.
As
parents we all know that we cannot put our child in a
protective bubble to ensure their safety and well being. But
why not minimize the risks. Child safety is a very serious
topic for parents these days. Homeschooling your children
certainly isn't the end all be all, but homeschooling will
certainly help minimize the risk. And with your child's
education being taught at home, you can and certainly make
child safety a part of your homeschool lesson plan or your
homeschool curriculum.
There are plenty of quality programs,
lesson kits and information on child safety
that teach
children how to recognize potentially dangerous situations
and what preventative steps to take.
Because of the rise in child
safety issues and crimes against children law enforcement
and other public agencies have made readily available child
safety kits that offer fingerprinting, DNA samples,
photographs, dental records, and physical descriptions. Of
course, your comfort level in your particular environment
will determine the extent of how much child safety education
and preparation you incorporate into your homeschooling
schedule. However, certainly even with a homeschooling
family the safety of your child and being prepared are worth
the time and education.
