A preschool math lesson plan isn't so much a well thought
out and structured lesson plan as it is simply encouraging
and introducing the concepts of math and numbers and such
into your child's daily life.
Every day you preschool aged child is probably involved in
dividing up toys that they play with or snacks, treats, and
their meals among their siblings or friends. The concept of
preschool math comes into play (literally) when the kids
build towers with their blocks with simple concepts such as
larger than, smaller than, vertical, horizontal, and such.
No need when teaching preschool math to attempt to have your
child sit at desk or their favorite spot and work on
learning numbers.
This is where you come in.
Help them as
they play and make these discoveries in their daily routines
of playing. With this type of mathematic discovery you can
introduce to your preschool child such concepts as heavier,
lighter than, length, width, parallel, balancing different
weights and shapes.
One of the simplest yet most effective questions you can ask
your budding preschool mathematician is “how many”. How many
more blocks do you think you'll need? How many fish do you
see in this picture? How many more pretzels do you need to
have as many as your sister?
Encourage your preschooler to count their spaces as they
move their token around their favorite board game. Use
simple games that involve rolling dice and summing the
numbers. Always asking your child how many they see, how
long or tall is something. Do you think this big block will
fit inside this box? Always encourage and allow time for
logic and problem solving with your preschooler. This is
math.
Have your child engage in activities such as sorting objects
by shape, by color, by size. Fitting these objects into
various sized containers is a good exercise for the concept
of shape and dimensions. Asking your child which objects are
pointing to the right or left, up or down.
Engage with your child's everyday activities and ask them to
look for, count, and describe in relation to, such as in
front of or behind, parallel or perpendicular to. Do you
think this object is heavier than this? Will it reach across
to here? How many days left to your birthday, until we go to
the zoo, etc? Have fun with preschool math simply weighing
and measuring you child and discuss inches and pounds.
Preschool math lessons are everywhere in you child's
daily life and you have probably been engaged at some level.
Preschool math activities are more often than not just carrying
forward what you child is already experiencing.
