How I Started This Website |
|
|
For
me (as I stand on my soapbox) teaching your child reading is
the single most important aspect of your child's education you
should influence.
Without a solid foundation in how to read, your
child is dragging an educational boat anchor and the prospects for
lifelong successes are limited. When you teach your child to read
and read well, they can then learn any subject matter that interests
them. You're right they can read the instructions; they can read the
first chapter on math and science, then the second, the third, and
so on! And with reach learning experience stemming from knowing how
to read, they gain confidence that they can learn anything and
anything on their own!
So,
how do we teach our child to read? Without question, the best
way is to start early. Read to your child often. Read to them
everyday. Then as they grow older, gradually expose them to the
letters themselves and the sounds that they make. The key is a
steady non forceful, encouraging approach to teaching your child to
read.
As
the child's reading growth continues and they have learned to
recognize letters and the sounds they make, you will progress to
recognizing groups of letters and the associated sounds they make.
From there, we build on putting together single syllable words and
beyond. This skill is a crucial step in that this will enable the
child to soon be able to recognize (or decode) words that they
haven't seen before. Please don't oversimplify this process that I
have summed up in a couple sentences. Teaching your child to read
takes steady constant guidance, and plenty of practice on the part
of the child. But, with the two they will become fluent readers.
Teaching reading to your child
is a methodical step by step
approach that grows with your child enhance by your involvement in
the process by discussing and understanding your child's reading
skill early and often in the process.
Comprehension will grow along with your child's confidence and their
enthusiasm to read. Once a good reading fluency has been reached
your child will read for understanding of any school subject and for
enjoyment!
