Enrolling a child to a homeschool program entails a responsibility for one of the parents, usually the moms, to act out as a teacher-parent of their child. But this task is not made easy because there arise some problems along with this activity, and one of these is that of psychological exhaustion otherwise known as homeschool burnout. This is brought about by several affecting factors such as:
- an illness
- a new baby
- added responsibility
- change in routine, etc.
Symptoms of homeschool burnout may alter from intolerance to overindulging and desperation expressed by unreasonable crying. Remarkably, experiencing burnout at homeschool is not really a terrible thing that one should dread. It is nothing but a reminder for us to realize that some things need to be adjusted or rearranged. But if you are aware that homeschool burnout is somewhat on the air, you may take action to evade or counteract it. How?
- Don’t have too much expectation. You, becoming a perfectionist may affect the study mood of your child. When things turn out the way you did not expect, just remember those days when everything seems so smooth.
- Look for some alternative methods when the one you are using does not fit or not functioning well. Take some adjustments and be flexible.
- Always find time to have some break especially during stressful times. Relax and breathe in some fresh air.
- Change your teaching styles if needed. Small children love it when they quiz an adult during their spelling lessons. Be creative. Do not dwell on a teaching style that works only for you but not for your child or vice-versa.
- Do not overload. Too many activities won’t work for you and your kid as well. When necessary, seek your spouse’s assistance; or may be from the other support groups or your neighbor.
As the absolute guide of your child in his or her homeschooling, it is not good that you carry everything on your shoulders. Becoming over-fatigue weakens your entire self. Remember, a homeschool life should be a happy endeavor. Your homeschool student – your child – relies on you. Overcome homeschool burnout, do not let it overcome you.
